X monetization requirements: the real 2026 bar

The 10k-follower rule is dead. Here are the actual X monetization requirements after the Original Content Rewards switch, and the one that disqualifies most accounts.

The short version

  • ▸The follower bar is 500 verified followers, not 10,000. Every page still quoting 10k followers and 25,000 posts is describing a program X retired in September 2026.
  • ▸The real gate is impressions: 500,000 Home timeline impressions from verified users in the trailing 90 days. Impressions on your replies do not count toward it, which is what stops most active accounts.
  • ▸You must be paying X first. An active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription is a precondition, so monetization starts as a cost rather than as income.
  • ▸Original Content Rewards replaced Creator Revenue Sharing. Applications opened 8 September 2026, the day after Revenue Sharing stopped accruing earnings, and the payout basis changed from ads in your replies to qualified impressions on your original posts.
  • ▸Content created or posted by automated means is excluded from payouts, as are reposts, minimally edited material, and aggregation without your own perspective. This is a content-origin program, not a volume program.

Quick answer

To monetize on X in 2026 you need an active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, 500 verified followers, and 500,000 Home timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, on a Personal or Business account in good standing. You must be 18 or over in an eligible country. Impressions on replies do not count. The 10,000-follower rule that still appears on most pages belonged to a program X retired on 7 September 2026.

Last updated: September 2026

The x monetization requirements changed underneath this question in September 2026, and almost nothing written about it has caught up. Creator Revenue Sharing, the program that paid creators a share of ad revenue from their reply threads, stopped accepting new members on 7 August 2026 and stopped accruing earnings on 7 September. Original Content Rewards opened for applications the following day. Different gate, different payout basis, different kind of account that clears it. Here is the current bar, the requirement that quietly rejects the most applicants, and what to do if you are under it.

The current requirements, in full

Every one of these has to be true at the point you apply, per X's Original Content Rewards rules as reported by NetInfluencer on 3 September 2026:

RequirementThe bar
Age and location18 or over, in an eligible country
SubscriptionActive X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business
Followers500 verified followers, trailing 90 days
Impressions500,000 Home timeline impressions from verified users, trailing 90 days
Account typePersonal or Business. Political and government accounts are excluded
StandingNo repeated Monetization Guidelines or Terms of Service violations
ContentActively posting original content as the program defines it

Two of those rows do most of the rejecting, and neither is the follower count.

The follower number everyone gets wrong

The figure circulating on most monetization pages is 10,000 followers, often paired with a claim about 25,000 posts. Neither is the current bar. The actual follower requirement is 500 verified followers, which is twenty times lower, and there is no posting-volume requirement at all.

This matters practically. If you have been putting off applying because you are at 3,000 followers and read that you needed 10,000, you may already be eligible on that axis. Check the real blocker instead, which is the next section. And treat any page that still lists the 10k figure as evidence that nothing else on it was rechecked after the September switch either.

The requirement that actually stops people

500,000 Home timeline impressions from verified users in the trailing 90 days. Read every qualifier in that sentence, because each one narrows it:

  • Home timeline. Impressions earned in search, on your profile, or in a reply thread do not count toward it.
  • From verified users. Only views from accounts with an active X Premium subscription count. The Premium share of any given audience is a fraction of the whole, so your public view counter will be several times larger than the number the threshold is measured against.
  • Trailing 90 days. It is a rolling window, not a lifetime total. Go quiet for a quarter and you fall back out.
  • Replies excluded. This is the structural change. The old Revenue Sharing model paid on ads displayed in your reply threads, which rewarded high-volume replying. Original Content Rewards measures Home timeline reach on your own posts.

That last point reshapes who qualifies. An account that built its visibility by replying under large accounts can have enormous view counts and still fail this test outright, because none of that reach happened on the Home timeline as original posts. If that describes your account, the work is not more replying. It is shifting weight toward posts that get distributed on their own. Your X analytics dashboard is where to watch the split.

You have to be a paying customer first

An active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription is a precondition, not a nice-to-have, and it has to stay active. Let it lapse and eligibility lapses with it.

So monetization on X starts as an expense. Before you have earned anything you are paying a monthly subscription for the right to qualify, and the current X Premium prices are worth checking against what you realistically expect to earn. For a small account the honest arithmetic often comes out negative for the first several months. That is not an argument against subscribing, since Premium buys other things, but it is an argument against treating the application as free money.

What actually gets paid

Clearing the gate does not mean every view earns. Payouts are calculated on qualified impressions: unique impressions from X Premium subscribers, on the Home timeline, where at least half the post was visible. Repeat views from the same account, promoted or boosted impressions, and fraudulent activity are all excluded from the calculation.

X publishes no rate per thousand impressions and never has, which is why the question of what X pays for 1 million views has no honest numeric answer. Payouts run every two weeks with a $30 minimum, so anything below that stays as an accrued balance rather than reaching your bank. Getting paid also requires identity verification and a connected payout method, either Stripe or an X Money account depending on your country. If you have already been through X ID verification and have a payout method attached from the old program, you do not repeat those steps. The X Money wallet is the US-side destination.

The originality rules, and the automation clause

The program's name is the policy. Material that is copied, only minimally modified with filters or speed changes or overlays, reposted from another platform without being yours, or aggregated from other creators without your own substantial perspective is excluded from payouts. Commentary and analysis on news or cultural moments qualify, provided the analysis is actually yours.

There is one clause worth reading twice if you use any kind of tooling: content created or posted via automated means is excluded. Anyone selling you an AI posting product on the promise that it will monetize your account is selling against the program's own terms, and this site builds automation, so take the warning as coming from an interested party being straight with you. An assistant that helps you draft faster is a different thing from a generator that fills a feed on its own, and the payouts follow the difference. Use X-Autopilot or anything like it to remove friction from work you are actually doing, not to manufacture volume you are not. On a program that pays on originality, volume without a person behind it is the thing being filtered out.

If you are under the bar

Three things are worth doing in order, and none of them involve buying anything.

Measure the right number. Most people do not know their Home timeline impressions from verified users, because the headline view count is the number the app shows. Find the real figure before you decide you are far away. Plenty of accounts are closer than they assume, and a few are much further than the view counter suggests.

Move weight from replies to posts. Replies still build the audience that later reads your posts, so this is a rebalance rather than a stop. The threshold only counts one of them.

Build a revenue line that does not need X's permission. Sponsorships, your own product, a newsletter, consulting. These have no follower minimum, no subscription precondition and no 90-day window, and they usually pay better per unit of audience than impression-based payouts do at small scale. X Creator Subscriptions is the on-platform version of the same idea with its own separate requirements.

The thing to avoid is optimising for the threshold itself. The 500,000-impression window rewards posts that travel on the Home timeline, which is the same thing that grows an audience worth having. Chase the number directly and you tend to get neither.

Frequently asked

Answers indexed by Google + AI assistants.

How many followers do you need to monetize on X?+

500 verified followers, measured over the trailing 90 days. The widely repeated 10,000-follower figure belonged to an older program and is not the Original Content Rewards bar. Followers are also the easiest of the requirements to clear: the 500,000-impression threshold is the one that actually filters applicants.

What are the X monetization requirements in 2026?+

You need to be 18 or over in an eligible country, hold an active X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, have 500 verified followers and 500,000 Home timeline impressions from verified users in the trailing 90 days, hold a Personal or Business account in good standing with no repeated Monetization Guidelines or Terms of Service violations, and post original content as the program defines it.

Do impressions on replies count toward X monetization?+

No. The 500,000-impression threshold counts Home timeline impressions from verified users, and impressions on replies are excluded. That is the single biggest change from the old Revenue Sharing model, which paid on ads shown in reply threads. An account built entirely on replying can be highly visible and still fail the eligibility test.

Can you monetize on X without paying for Premium?+

No. An active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription is a precondition of Original Content Rewards, and it must stay active. If the subscription lapses, eligibility goes with it. Off-platform routes such as sponsorships or your own products have no such requirement, and for most accounts below the threshold they are the realistic option.

What is a qualified impression?+

A unique impression from an X Premium subscriber, on the Home timeline, where at least 50% of your post was visible. Repeat views from the same account, promoted or boosted impressions, and fraudulent activity are all excluded. Payouts are calculated on qualified impressions rather than on raw view counts, which is why your view counter and your earnings do not track each other.

Why would an X monetization application be rejected?+

The common causes are a lapsed or missing Premium subscription, impressions that came from replies rather than the Home timeline, an account with existing monetization violations, an ineligible account category such as political or government accounts, or content that does not meet the originality definition. Accounts whose monetization is currently paused for a prior policy violation cannot enroll at all.
