How to go live on X (and why the button is missing)

Most guides for this query describe a four-tap flow and stop. That flow is correct and it is also the smaller half of the answer, because the single most common version of "how to go live on X" is really "why can I not go live on X" - the button is missing, and nothing in the app explains why.

Two things changed it. X (formerly Twitter) put broadcasting behind the Premium paywall in July 2024, and in July 2026 it shipped Live Studio, a desktop control room that moved serious streaming off the phone entirely. #Who can actually go live

Live video is a paid feature, and the tier matters:

Broadcasting has been restricted to Premium and Premium+ since 14 July 2024, and the Basic plan is explicitly excluded (Restream Help Center, updated March 2026). Prices come from X's About X Premium page, checked 15 September 2026 and broken down tier by tier in our X Premium price guide.

Two details trip people up. The first is that the $3 tier reads like "Premium" in every headline and is not the tier that unlocks this, which is why several news write-ups of the 2026 relaunch quoted $3 for a capability that needs $8. The second is the checkmark: the streaming tools sit behind Media Studio, which X lists at the Premium tier, and Premium access lands after the account has been reviewed and the checkmark applied. A subscription that went through minutes ago may not light up the Live option yet. The verification process is the gate, not a second purchase.

One more hard block, and it has nothing to do with money. You cannot go live from a protected account. X's live video help page states it plainly, and adds a consequence worth knowing: if you make an account protected after broadcasting publicly, your old live videos become discoverable only to your followers.

So when the Live option is missing, work down this list before you contact support: wrong tier, checkmark not applied yet, protected posts, stale app build. That order matches how often each one is the cause.

#How to go live from the phone

The mobile flow is where most broadcasts still start, and X documents it as four steps:

1. Tap the media icon in the composer. Same icon you use to attach a photo.
2. Tap Live in the bottom selector. If it is not there, go back to the section above.
3. Add a description and a location if you want them. The description becomes the text of the post that carries your broadcast, so treat it as a headline rather than a label.
4. Tap Go live. The broadcast posts to your followers' timelines and to your profile straight away.

To finish, press Stop at the top left and confirm in the menu that appears. There is no separate publish step: the post already exists, and it turns into the replay.

A couple of habits pay off here. Write the description before you tap, because you will not want to think about copy while a live audience watches you type. And check what the phone is doing about orientation and network before you start, since a broadcast that drops at minute two is worse than one that started five minutes later.

#Live Studio: the desktop control room

On 1 July 2026 X launched Live Studio in beta, a redesigned livestreaming control room built into Creator Studio on the web. Premium subscribers reach it at x.com/i/live-studio or through Creator Studio, and X's own launch article lists what it adds over the phone flow:

• Create or schedule a stream up to a year in advance, with countdown timers, custom thumbnails, and automatic or manual start.
• Private test streams, so you can check your encoder without an audience watching you check your encoder.
• Reusable RTMP sources, rather than re-authorising an encoder each time.
• Live control: change the stream title mid-broadcast, toggle chat on or off, and adjust who can participate without stopping.
• Chat audiences: Everyone, Verified Accounts, Accounts You Follow, Subscribers, or Chat Off.
• Real-time analytics: concurrent viewers, viewer activity and watch time, chat participation, top countries and device breakdown, all of which stay available after the stream ends.
• Distribution: post the stream to X, copy its URL, or generate embed code for a newsletter or site.
• Geo-restrictions and a download of the finished broadcast.

X says the older Media Studio Producer "remains available for now", so nothing you already use has been switched off. Alongside the launch, product head Nikita Bier said X would be "rewarding creators who livestream by allocating $1 million in the upcoming cycle" (Social Media Today, 1 July 2026). How that million gets split was never published, so treat it as a signal of intent rather than a number you can forecast against.

#Streaming with OBS, Streamlabs or another encoder

If you want overlays, multiple cameras or a proper scene setup, you stream from software rather than the composer.

In Live Studio you create a Source, which is the connection point that ingests your video over RTMP. Pick the ingest region closest to your encoder for the lowest latency: X's Live Studio help page lists US East (N. Virginia) and US West (N. California), and notes that RTMPS is available for transport security while RTMP authentication is not currently supported. You cannot change a source's region after creating it, so a source made in the wrong region has to be replaced.

X's older, still-documented route works from the encoder side instead: choose Custom Streaming Server in your application or hardware settings, select X to authenticate, log in to the account you want the stream to reach, accept the permissions, and start streaming.

Neither route sidesteps the subscription. Some streaming-software marketing pages still say you can stream to X without a Premium account, which was true before July 2024 and is not now. If your broadcast never appears on X while your other destinations work, check the subscription before you debug the encoder.

#What happens after you stop

The replay is the part people underuse. Your broadcast is already a post, so it behaves like one: searchable on X, embeddable on other sites, deletable by deleting the post.

• Save a copy. Tap Save to camera roll at the end of the broadcast. Live Studio also offers a download of completed livestreams from the dashboard.
• Fix the packaging. In the iOS and Android apps, open the broadcast, tap the overflow menu, then Edit Broadcast to change the title, the thumbnail, and the custom starting point that viewers land on. Titles can be edited up to three times, and edits take up to 15 minutes to appear.
• Moderate the room. Viewers send hearts and comments. Blocking an account from a comment removes it from your broadcast and blocks it across X; reporting a comment hides that commenter for the rest of the stream without blocking them.
• Read the numbers. Live Studio keeps the viewer, watch-time, country and device data after the stream. Pair that with your native X analytics rather than judging a stream by its replay view count alone.

A custom starting point is the most valuable of these and the least used. Almost every stream opens with three minutes of "can everyone hear me", and the replay audience did not sign up for that. Move the start to the moment the content actually begins.

#Live video or a Space?

Before paying for any of this, be honest about the format. X Spaces is live audio, it is free for every account, and it needs no subscription, no checkmark and no follower minimum. Live video costs $8 a month at the least and asks you to be on camera.

Pick video when the thing being shown matters: a demo, a build, an event, a face. Pick a Space when the value is the conversation, when you want guests without a production setup, or when you are testing whether anyone shows up at all. A Space that draws 40 listeners twice is better evidence than an empty broadcast, and it costs nothing to run. Format aside, the same constraint applies to both: video length limits and file rules govern what you can upload later, and a live audience has to be built before it can be broadcast to.

That building is the unglamorous part. A stream reaches roughly the audience your posting already earns you, so the replies and posts you make in the days before a broadcast decide who turns up for it.
