How to tag someone on X (and in a photo)

To tag someone on X, type the @ symbol followed by their username inside your post and choose their account from the list that appears. To tag someone in a photo instead, attach the image, tap Tag people on the web or "Who's in this photo?" in the app, type their name, and tap Done before you post. The first one spends characters and shows in the text. The second one attaches to the image and costs you nothing.

#TL;DR

Most guides answer only half of this question, because X has two tagging systems that look similar and behave differently.

A mention is text. It lives in the body of the post, counts toward your character limit, and turns into a profile link. A photo tag is metadata on the image. It costs no characters, appears when someone opens the picture, and has its own privacy setting that many people have never found. Removing one is easy, removing the other is not.

#How to @mention someone

This is the tag people mean nine times out of ten.

1. Open the compose box on x.com or in the app.
2. Type @ and start typing the username. A list appears, narrowing as you type. Accounts you follow surface first, which is why the wrong Dave keeps showing up if you do not follow the right one.
3. Select the account. X inserts the exact handle.
4. Finish the post and send it.

X's help page describes the same three steps and adds the detail worth remembering: "When posted, the username in your post will become a link to the account's profile page" (About replies and mentions, Wayback capture 18 September 2026). You can mention several accounts in one post and all of them see it in their Notifications tab.

Two things people get wrong here. Display names are not handles, so tagging "Sarah Chen" does nothing unless you pick the @ suggestion. The mistake that kills your reach

Start a post with an @username and X treats it as a reply rather than a normal post.

That is not a rumour. X's own documentation says that when two people are replying to one another, "only relevant people, such as those who follow the person who replied and the person in the conversation, will see the reply in their timeline." A post opening with a handle lands in that bucket, so your followers may never see it.

The fix takes one character. Write "Great thread from @someone" rather than "@someone great thread," or put a full stop in front of the handle if you genuinely want the mention first. #How to tag someone in a photo

Photo tags are the feature people forget exists, and they are the better option when the caption is already full.

On x.com: attach the photo, click Tag people, type a full name or username, then click Done.

On iOS and Android: attach the photo, tap Who's in this photo?, type the full name or @ username, then tap Done. X documents that exact wording in its iOS guide, under the photo editing options.

Then post as normal. The tagged accounts get a notification, and the post appears in their timeline if they follow you.

The rules around this are unusually strict, so they are worth listing plainly:

• You can select 1 to 4 photos in a post, and tags apply per photo.
• Tags cannot be applied to animated GIFs. Nothing will happen if you try.
• You can only remove a tag before you post. X's help page is explicit: "You can't remove tags from a photo once it is posted." Deleting the post is the only route back.
• Tags cost no characters. Photo and GIF attachments do not count toward the limit, and neither do the tags on them.
• Protected accounts still tag and get tagged. Tags work the same way; the audience is what changes.

That third point is the one that catches people. Type the wrong handle, post it, and your only options are living with it or deleting. Check the suggestion list before tapping Done.

#When someone tags you

Tagged posts land in your Notifications tab. If you follow the person who tagged you, the post also appears in your timeline.

To remove yourself from a photo tag:

• iOS or Android: open the post you are tagged in, tap the icon at the top, select Remove tag from photo, then confirm with Delete.
• x.com: tap the icon at the top of the post, select Remove my tag from photo, then OK.

You do not need the poster's permission, and they are not asked. This is the asymmetry that makes photo tags workable: the person who added the tag is stuck with it, the person tagged is not.

To get out of a mention thread, X has a separate control called Leave this conversation. From your Notifications tab, open the Mentions tab, find the post, tap the more icon and select Leave this conversation. X's warning is worth reading before you confirm: people cannot mention you again in that conversation, notifications stop, and your handle link is hidden. You can still read the thread. X states the action cannot currently be undone.

#The setting that stops it happening again

Photo tagging has a dedicated privacy control, separate from everything else on the privacy screen.

Go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, and under Posts open Photo tagging. Three states are available:

X asks for up to 30 minutes for a change here to take effect, which explains why it can look like the setting did nothing when you test it straight away.

The middle option is the one most people want and almost nobody sets. It keeps tags working for friends and colleagues while removing the surface that engagement-farming accounts use, which is tagging a dozen strangers onto a promotional image.

Turning off photo tagging does not stop @mentions. Those are text, and the only controls for them are Leave this conversation, muting, and blocking. #Tagging without annoying people

Tagging is a request for someone's attention, and X users are unusually quick to punish a bad one.

A few rules that hold up:

• Tag people who are in the story, not people you want to notice you. If the post does not mention what they did, the tag is a cold DM in public.
• One or two per post. A wall of handles reads as spam, and repeatedly tagging accounts that did not ask for it is the kind of behaviour covered by X's authenticity and platform manipulation policy.
• Use a photo tag when the caption is doing other work. Credit a photographer or name the people in a group shot without spending characters on it.
• Reply to the person instead of mentioning them in a new post. A reply arrives with context attached. A bare mention arrives as a puzzle.
• If you want a specific person to answer, ask a specific question. Tagging someone under a vague take is how mentions get muted.

There is one growth use of tagging that genuinely works, and it is quieter than the tactic above: mention the person whose idea you are building on, in the middle of a post that stands on its own.
