#What Imagine actually does

xAI describes Imagine as one of the core surfaces of Grok, next to chat, search and multi-agent mode. From the product page (x.ai/grok, Wayback capture 19 August 2026):

• Text-to-image and text-to-video in the same thread, so the clip and the still come from one conversation.
• Generation from a reference photo, not only from a text prompt.
• Editing by follow-up prompt, which means restyling or fixing an output without starting over.
• Output up to 2K resolution and 15-second videos.

That last line sets the honest expectation. Imagine is a short-form tool. Fifteen seconds is a hook, a loop, a reply that lands, not a product demo. #Who can actually use it

Here is where the ranking pages fall apart. Two companies publish two different documents, and only one of them mentions Imagine at all.

What xAI publishes. On the pricing page (Wayback capture 20 September 2026), the individual plans read:

The Free card does not list generation. The comparison table lower down the same page also shows tiers that the three cards do not price publicly, including SuperGrok Lite and SuperGrok Heavy, so treat any blog post quoting a single definitive tier list as a snapshot rather than a rule.

What X publishes. The About X Premium page (Wayback capture 31 August 2026) describes the tiers like this: Premium includes "increased usage limits on Grok", Premium+ includes "higher limits on Grok, no ads anywhere on X, largest reply prioritization, Radar Search, and Articles". Imagine appears nowhere. SuperGrok appears exactly once, in a different context: Premium Business and Premium Organizations accounts "receive Premium+ included with their main subscription. This also includes access to SuperGrok, xAI's Premium subscription for the Grok web and mobile app."

So X commits to bundling SuperGrok for business subscribers and stays vague for everyone else. Plenty of sites confidently tell you Premium+ unlocks Imagine. X's page does not, and a help page is the thing you would cite in a billing dispute.

Practical advice: if generation is why you are subscribing, open the surface you intend to use, try one prompt on a monthly plan, and only then commit to a year. #How to use it on X

Access is the same door as the rest of Grok. X's help page says Grok runs on iOS, Android and web in every country where X is available, and that you open it from the Grok icon in the navigation bar.

1. Tap the Grok icon in the nav bar on x.com or in the app.
2. Describe the image or clip. Be specific about subject, style, framing and mood. "Wide shot, slate grey studio, single product on a plinth, soft rim light" beats "cool product photo".
3. Iterate in the same thread. Because editing happens by follow-up prompt, the cheapest fix is a sentence, not a regenerate from scratch.
4. Or start from a photo. X shipped a Grok-powered image editor inside the composer in April 2026 with draw, text and blur tools plus natural language edits, announced for iOS first with Android to follow (TechCrunch, 8 April 2026). The blur tool is the underrated one: it strips a screenshot of details you did not mean to publish.
5. If you get a subscribe prompt instead of an image, generation is gated for your account. That is the paywall, not a bug.

#The cheaper route: the API

If your actual need is "images and short clips for posts" rather than "an AI app on my phone", the developer pricing is a different order of magnitude. From xAI's model docs, read 25 September 2026:

Do the arithmetic against $30 a month. Thirty dollars buys roughly 1,500 standard images, or about ten minutes of generated video at the base rate. Posting two generated images a day costs about $1.20 a month.

You give up real things: no app, no browsing history of your generations, no in-thread editing, and you write the glue code yourself. It is the right trade for a scheduled posting workflow and the wrong one for casual use. #What you are allowed to post

Generating something in Grok does not pre-clear it for the timeline. Enforcement lands on the account that posts.

X's rules on synthetic and manipulated media prohibit sharing media that is "significantly and deceptively altered, manipulated, or fabricated in a way that fundamentally changes its meaning", and the policy explicitly names "media depicting a real person that has been fabricated or simulated, especially through use of algorithms or broader artificial intelligence". The same page allows "sharing manipulated or out-of-context media in non-deceptive ways", which is the lane most creative use sits in: label it, do not pass it off as real, do not put words in a real person's mouth.

Two other policies apply to the failure mode that made Imagine famous: non-consensual nudity and adult content. Read them before you test what the model will do rather than after. #Why it got paywalled

The chronology explains the confusion better than any feature table.

Through late 2025 image generation was open to anyone with daily limits. In January 2026 the tool was widely misused to produce sexualised imagery of real people, including minors, and the backlash was international. On 9 January 2026, Grok announced that only paying subscribers on X could generate and edit images on the platform, while the standalone Grok app still let anyone generate (TechCrunch, 9 January 2026). Musk's public line was that "anyone using grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content."

Governments moved next. Indonesia and Malaysia temporarily blocked Grok that same week, California's attorney general opened an investigation on 14 January, and Ireland's data protection regulator opened its own in February. Reporting through March put the remaining free generation on the standalone site and app behind the SuperGrok tier, which matches what xAI's pricing page shows today.

Read that as a durable state, not a promotion. Capacity and liability both pushed the same direction, and xAI has published no timeline for reopening free generation.

#Is it worth paying for

Depends entirely on what you post.

Worth it if your account leans visual and you publish several times a week. Generating a bespoke image per post at conversation speed beats hunting stock, and a 15-second clip in a reply is still unusual enough to earn attention.

Not worth it if you post mostly text. Generated images do not rescue a weak hook, and a timeline of obviously synthetic art gets tuned out fast. The best time to post on X and a sharper first line will move your numbers more than any generator will.

Worth it at the API tier if you have a repeatable format: one templated image per post, generated on a schedule, at two cents a go.

One last thing worth saying plainly. The models improve every few months, the tiers get renamed, and the prices move. Everything above is sourced to a dated capture for exactly that reason.
