The flow X publishes is three steps:

1. Go to the video you want to download.
2. Tap the three dot icon in the top right corner.
3. Tap Download video.

No third-party site, no browser extension, no pasted URL. The file lands on your device the way any other download would. It is gated behind a paid subscription, which is presumably why so few guides bother mentioning it, and the current tier costs are broken down in X Premium price.

#Why the option is missing on the video you actually want

This is the part worth understanding, because "Download video is not showing up" is the real problem behind most searches here. X gives creators the switch and it defaults differently depending on when the video went up.

X's wording on the creator control is specific: "videos you upload to X will be downloadable by Premium subscribers, unless you opt out by disabling the Allow video to be downloaded option on your video while composing your Post."

There is a sting in the tail for posters. X notes that this setting "cannot be changed later; to disable downloads in the future, you would need to delete the post itself." So the decision is made once, in the composer, under Edit > Settings on the uploaded clip, and it is permanent for the life of that post. If you post video regularly and care about where the file ends up, that is a habit to build now rather than a regret to have later. One more limit people misread: protected accounts. X says that if your posts are protected, followers "may download or re-share links to videos that you share in protected posts," and that links to videos on X are not themselves protected. Locking your account narrows who sees the post. It does not wrap the media in anything.

#Videos sent in a DM

Direct Messages got the same treatment on a later schedule. From version 10.24 of the Android and iOS apps, videos sent in a DM are downloadable unless the sender disabled Allow video to be downloaded before hitting send. Videos sent from app versions below 10.24 are not downloadable at all.

In the inbox the gesture is different from the timeline one:

1. Long press the video in the conversation.
2. Tap Download video.

Senders get the same one-shot control, with the same catch: X says the option cannot be changed after the message has been sent. #Saving your own video

If the video is yours, you never need a downloader at all. Two supported routes exist.

Live broadcasts. X's live video help page says you can save a broadcast "right to your device's camera roll at the end of your live video by tapping Save to camera roll." Do it in the moment. Going back later means dealing with the post, not the source file.

Everything else: the archive. Requesting your X archive gives you a downloadable bundle of your account data with your media alongside your posts. #What third-party downloader sites actually involve

Search this query and you will hit a dozen paste-the-link sites, most of them claiming HD, no watermark, no signup. Two things are worth knowing before you use one.

X's rules treat this as out of bounds. The X Terms of Service state that you "may not access the Services in any way other than through the currently available, published interfaces that we provide," and add that "crawling or scraping the Services in any form, for any purpose without our prior written consent is expressly prohibited." A downloader site works by pulling the media file outside those interfaces. That is X's own framing, not an interpretation, and it is why the honest answer is that these tools sit outside the rules rather than in a supported gray area of X's making. Never sign in to one. A downloader that asks for your X username and password, or asks you to authorise a suspicious app, is asking for the keys to your account. No legitimate download flow needs them. If you have already handed credentials to one, change your password and review your connected apps, and treat X account hacked as the recovery checklist.

Screen recording is the other fallback people reach for. It is device-level, so X's settings have no say in it, and it costs you quality and picks up your own interface along the way. It also does nothing about the question underneath all of this.

X frames its download feature as being for offline viewing and remixing. It does not transfer ownership of anything. Re-uploading someone else's clip as your own post is a copyright report waiting to happen, and on X the practical consequence is the post coming down and a strike on the account that posted it.
