How to change your profile picture on X (and your header)

#Quick answer

To change your profile picture on X, open your profile, click or tap Edit profile, click the camera icon on the round photo, choose Upload photo, set the crop, then click Apply and Save. The flow is the same on x.com, iOS and Android. Use a square image close to 400x400 pixels, under 2MB, in JPEG or PNG.

The button is not what trips people up. What trips them up is that X (formerly Twitter) refuses animated GIFs as avatars, caps profile photo files at 2MB, and will not accept an upload at all unless you are on x.com or an official app. Break one of those rules and nothing happens. No error banner, no explanation, just the old photo still sitting there.

#Change your profile picture on x.com

1. Sign in at x.com and click Profile in the left sidebar.
2. Click Edit profile. The panel that opens holds your header photo, profile photo, name, bio, location, website and birth date.
3. Click the camera icon on the round profile photo and select Upload photo.
4. Pick the file, then drag and zoom until the circle frames what you want.
5. Click Apply, then click Save.

Two clicks, two confirmations. X's own upload troubleshooting page calls out the second one specifically: "Make sure you click Apply. Your image won't save until you do." That single missed click explains more "my picture won't change" complaints than every file-format problem combined.

#Change it in the iOS and Android apps

Same route, smaller screen. Tap your profile icon in the top menu, tap Profile, then Edit profile. Tap the camera icon on the avatar, choose Take photo or pick an existing one, pinch to zoom, then confirm and tap Save.

There is no separate mobile setting and nothing hidden in Settings and privacy. X puts every profile field behind the one Edit profile button, which is why searching the settings menu for a "profile picture" option turns up nothing.

One quirk worth knowing if you are setting up a brand new account: X notes that during initial profile setup, the option to change your display name does not appear until you have uploaded both a profile photo and a header photo. If the name field looks missing, add the images first.

#The file rules X actually enforces

The animated GIF line surprises people every time. GIF is on the accepted list, so the file uploads without complaint, and then sits there as a single frozen frame. X's help page says it directly: the platform does not support animated GIFs for profile or header images. Accounts with moving avatars are doing something else, usually a video pinned in the header space or a Premium feature, not an animated profile photo.

Blurriness has a duller cause. Upload something smaller than 400x400 and the browser stretches it to fill the circle. Upload something enormous and X compresses it down. A clean 400x400 export, or a 800x800 for retina screens, avoids both ends.

#Change your header photo in the same panel

Your header sits directly above the avatar inside that same Edit profile panel, with its own camera icon and the same Upload photo and Remove options. Recommended size is 1500x500, a 3:1 ratio.

Then comes the part nobody warns you about. X says that even at the exact recommended dimensions, roughly 60 pixels can be cropped from the top and 60 from the bottom depending on monitor size and browser. Your 1500x500 file is really a 1500x380 safe zone with decorative margins. Put your tagline, your product shot or your face in that middle band and it survives every screen.

#Why your upload keeps failing

Work down this list in order. It is X's own troubleshooting sequence, reordered by how often each one is the culprit.

• You did not click Apply. The crop screen looks committed before it is. Apply, then Save.
• You are not on an official surface. Uploads require x.com or the official iOS or Android app. A third-party client or an embedded in-app browser will let you pick a file and then quietly drop it.
• The file is over 2MB. A photo straight off a modern phone camera is routinely 4 to 8MB. Export at 400x400 and the size problem disappears with it.
• Wrong format. HEIC from an iPhone and WebP from a download are the two that fail most. Convert to JPEG or PNG.
• Old browser. X suggests updating it or trying a different one before assuming the image is at fault.

If the new photo saves but old ones keep appearing next to your posts, that is caching, not failure. Avatars are served from a content delivery network and older copies linger for a while in feeds, in other people's apps and in embeds. Hard-refresh your own profile and give the rest an hour.

#Removing a picture, and what a change does not do

To remove either image, click the camera icon and choose Remove rather than Upload photo, then Save. Your avatar reverts to X's default grey silhouette. There is no archive of previous profile photos to restore from, so keep the original file somewhere if you might want it back.

Changing your avatar does not rename your account, does not notify your followers, and does not reset anything about your reach. It is cosmetic. If what you actually want is a different handle, that is a separate and much more consequential change, covered in how to change your username on X.

Worth noting for anyone tidying up a profile in one sitting: the avatar is the least readable part of it at timeline scale. A face or a single bold mark reads at 32 pixels; a detailed logo with small text does not.
